Poster illustration for Vice City 2002 vs GTA 6 — not a remake

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City shipped in 2002 as a PlayStation 2 / PC crime story set in the 1980s. Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled for 19 November 2026 and is billed, in Rockstar’s 6 November 2025 Newswire, as a return to modern-day Vice City, inside the state of Leonida. Same franchise city name. Different decade. Different engine generation. Different game.

If you searched “GTA 6 vs Vice City,” you are not getting a remake. You are getting a numbered sequel that reused the most famous satire Rockstar has of Miami, then put a whole state around it. The 2002 game is still the 2002 game. VI’s city page is Vice City. The state is Leonida.

Series sales context, from Take-Two’s 24 June 2026 pre-order release: Grand Theft Auto has “over 470 million units sold-in worldwide.” That is the franchise, not a 2002-versus-2026 forecast.

What actually carries the name

Vice City, in 2002, was neon, pastel crime, a radio that taught a generation the 1980s as a joke, and a mansion-and-empire loop. VI’s product-page copy opens “Vice City, USA” and calls it “the darkest side of the sunniest place in America.” Only in Leonida: “neon-soaked streets of Vice City and beyond.” The neon idea survived. The decade did not.

Tommy Vercetti is not a listed lead in VI. He appears as franchise memory in pre-order marketing: the Vintage Vice City Pack’s weapon pattern is “inspired by Tommy Vercetti’s iconic palm tree button-up” (Take-Two / Rockstar, 24 June 2026). Ultimate’s Morgan revolvers are “sourced from the Vercetti Estate” in the same materials. Those are copy callbacks. They are not a statement that 1986 Tommy is in the 2026 campaign.

The Vintage pack itself — ’55 Vapid Stanier, outfits/hairstyles, weapon pattern, purchases before 20 November — is sold as “unique benefits that flash back to when the neon burned brightest.” Cosmetics in a new game. Not Vice City (2002) in the box. See editions.

The map is a state now

2002 Vice City was an island-city in the 3D-universe sense. VI’s named destinations are six: Vice City, Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, Mount Kalaga. That is a sunshine-state shape, not a single-city shape.

Map-size ratios versus 2002, versus Los Santos, versus RDR2, are not on rockstargames.com. Journalist-attributed comments after the Extended Look stay unconfirmed as spec. Do not write “VI’s Vice City is N times the 2002 map.” Nobody has published N.

District names from 2002 (Ocean Beach, Washington Beach, Vice Point, and the rest of that era’s labels) are not automatically 2026 labels. Ultimate copy does reuse Ocean Beach, Washington Beach, and Shore Drive in item blurbs. Those strings are official 2026 marketing. They are not a statement that the 2002 radar was pasted into RAGE. Dazed (August 2026) adds Stockyard (Wynwood analogue) and Little Cuba as interview language. Interview, not a 2002 import.

People: a couple, not a kingpin tutorial

2002 is Tommy’s rise. 2026 is Jason and Lucia after “an easy score goes wrong,” forced to rely on each other, conspiracy across Leonida. Rob Nelson told Dazed you can play as a couple or independently. Rupert Humphries called it “a Bonnie and Clyde-type narrative.” Interviews. Not a 2002 character-select screen.

Lucia is the first woman billed as a lead in a mainline numbered GTA. That is a series fact. Rockstar’s copy does not make a speech about it. It writes prison, a mother in Liberty City, a plan.

The 2002 supporting cast (Lance, Ken Rosenberg, the families) is not the 2026 supporting cast (Cal, Boobie, Dre'Quan, Real Dimez, Raul, Brian). Do not 1:1 map them. Boobie’s club being a GTA-staple strip club is Dazed plus the official “Jack of Hearts” tagline, not a 2002 property transferred.

Open world, twenty-four years apart

Say the quiet part: the 2002 map was huge for PS2 and small by 2026 standards. Interiors were special. Traffic was a trick. Radio was the soul.

Between 2002 and 2026 Rockstar shipped San Andreas, GTA IV, Red Dead Redemption, GTA V, Red Dead Redemption 2. The public claim for VI is the slogan on Trailer 1, the November 2025 Newswire, and the Extended Look: “the biggest, most immersive evolution of the Grand Theft Auto series yet.” That is a marketing line, not a measurement.

What is on the record for VI’s world, without turning Extended Look pause-frames into a manual:

  • Dual leads in a modern city-plus-state, not a 1980s island.
  • Phones and social-media satire (trailers; Nelson on the record about using the phone on the way to a job).
  • Appearance responding to food, exercise, sleep, benders (Nelson, Dazed).
  • A wanted HUD that outlets reading the Extended Look said shows six stars (footage / IGN reporting, not a Support spec).
  • Named shops and vehicles in Ultimate, some “only open for business with the Ultimate Edition.”

RAGE, as a name, is the internal engine family behind IV, V, and RDR2. Rockstar has not published a “RAGE 9” spec sheet for VI. Digital Foundry described the Extended Look capture as perhaps the most impressive real-time rendering showcase they had seen. That is a capture review. It is not a 2002-versus-2026 polygon count.

Do not write that VI “uses RAGE 9 with full ray tracing.” Not published. PS5 Pro has an Enhanced badge and no mode list.

What 2002 players will not get by default

  • A Tommy campaign. Callbacks in pack copy are not a prequel.
  • A 1980s radio as the entire aesthetic. VI’s satire is 2020s south-east. Humphries told Dazed about Miami bass through Kodak Black and Sexyy Red. Interview.
  • A PS2-sized map you memorize in a weekend. Unpublished size, but the pitch is a state.
  • Online deathmatch as the 2002 PC crowd remembers LAN. VI’s launch SKU is single-player. Online.

What they might get is the feeling of a city that treats crime as a weather system. That is the franchise, not a remaster.
