This page does not host leaked material and does not link to it. It is a record of what circulated about Grand Theft Auto VI in the years before launch, and how each claim looks now that Rockstar has published trailers, a store page, and two firm dates.
The useful part is not the leaks. It is the scoreboard. Some reporting was right years early. Some claims that were shared far wider than any of it were wrong the whole time, and a few are still being repeated.
Reporting that held up
In July 2022, Bloomberg's Jason Schreier reported that the next Grand Theft Auto would have a playable Latina protagonist, one of a pair described in Bonnie-and-Clyde terms, in a modern-day fictional Miami. That was seventeen months before Trailer 1 and nearly three years before Rockstar published character bios.
All of it landed. Lucia Caminos and Jason Duval are the named leads on rockstargames.com, the setting is present-day Vice City, and Rockstar's own November 2025 wording is a "return to modern day Vice City."
The same reporting said an early version of the project spanned North and South America and was cut back. Rockstar has never confirmed a codename or an original scope, so that half stays reporting, not fact. It matters later, because the discarded plan is the root of a rumour that outlived it.
Two things separate that report from the noise around it. It came from a named journalist at a publication that prints corrections, and it was specific enough to be wrong. Most of what circulates is neither.
What the 2022 breach actually showed
In September 2022 an intruder took footage of an unfinished build and posted roughly ninety clips. Rockstar confirmed the intrusion the next day and called the material early development footage. The company said development was unaffected.
Two details in that footage matched what Rockstar published later: the protagonists were named Lucia and Jason, and the setting was a modern Vice City. Those held.
The reading of that footage is where it went wrong. Coverage at the time described a five-star wanted system, because that is what the placeholder interface in the build showed. Coverage of the Extended Look in August 2026 counted six. Whichever number ships, the lesson stands on its own: an interface in an unfinished build is not a design document. A genuine leak can still mislead you, because you are reading a snapshot of work in progress as though it were a manual.
What circulated widely and was wrong
The 1980s setting. This survived for years on the strength of Vice City (2002) being set in 1986. Trailer 1 shows smartphones, social feeds, and modern traffic. Rockstar's own copy says modern day. The Vintage Vice City content in the Ultimate Edition is a cosmetic pack, not the era of the campaign.
A $100 base price. Analysts spent 2025 predicting Grand Theft Auto VI would reset the industry's price ceiling at one hundred dollars, and the figure became a headline on its own. The actual announcement on 24 June 2026 put Standard at $79.99 and Ultimate at $99.99. A hundred dollars buys the larger edition, not the base game. See price by region for why regional figures still disagree with each other.
PC at launch. Every official listing since Trailer 1 names PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. There is no PC date. See why there is no PC version yet.
"There is no PC version because Sony bought exclusivity." Take-Two's chief executive was asked this directly by Schreier in May 2026 and said no, describing Rockstar as historically console-first. Denying one explanation is not announcing a PC date, and the rumour is still repeated as fact.
A playable South America. This is the discarded early scope, recycled as though it were still in the game. The official world is the state of Leonida and the six named regions. No Rockstar material mentions anything else.
Different protagonists. Character lists circulating before Trailer 1 named people who do not exist in the game. After two trailers and published bios, those names are fan fiction.
A 2023 or 2024 release. Neither was ever an official window. Rockstar's first was 2025, then 26 May 2026, then 19 November 2026.
"A third delay is coming." In January 2026 a podcast remark was rewritten into a delay report by aggregator sites. What was actually said was more careful: the game was not content complete as of that conversation, nobody guarantees a date, and the November target felt more solid than the previous one. Take-Two's stock dipped on the retelling. Bloomberg published a piece specifically about the misinformation. As of today there is no third delay.
A real disc later. The physical edition is a download code in a box, stated plainly on the store page. Reports of discs arriving months after launch trace back to a misreading of that same code-in-box arrangement.
How to read a claim about this game
Four questions separate a claim worth reading from one worth ignoring.
Who is saying it, and have they been right before? A named reporter at an outlet that publishes corrections is a different category from an anonymous account. Both can be wrong. Only one has something to lose.
Is the claim specific enough to fail? "The map is huge" cannot be checked. "The leads are named Lucia and Jason" can.
Does it survive contact with official material? Rockstar has published trailers, bios, a store page, and support articles. A claim that contradicts those is not an insider tip.
Is it a screenshot of a screenshot? Aggregator sites rewrite each other, and a hedge in the original becomes a headline three hops later. Video generated by AI has already been passed off as gameplay at least once and then admitted to be an experiment.
September 2026
- “Delay to May 2027.” Recurring posts on 8 and 13 September 2026 came from zero-reach accounts. The earlier viral version was debunked by GTA BOOM. Rockstar’s published date remains 19 November 2026.
- AI-generated fake leak videos. On 12 September 2026, GameRoll flagged AI-generated fake GTA 6 leak videos circulating that month.
FAQ
Was the 2022 GTA 6 leak real?
Yes. Rockstar confirmed a network intrusion and described the material as early development footage.
Did the leak spoil the game?
It revealed protagonist names and the setting, both of which Rockstar later published anyway. Beyond that it showed an unfinished build.
Is the 1980s setting confirmed?
No, and it never was. Official material describes modern-day Vice City.
Does GTA 6 cost $100?
Standard is $79.99 in the United States and Ultimate is $99.99. Regional prices are set by each storefront.
Is a third delay happening?
No delay has been announced. The date on Rockstar's own site is 19 November 2026.
Will there be a PC version?
Rockstar has said the game will also come to PC, without a date. There is no PC listing today.
What we still don't know
- Whether any unpublished detail from the 2022 footage survived into the finished game. Most of it has never been addressed either way.
- The final wanted-level system, mission structure, or any mechanic Rockstar has not written down.
- Whether the reported plan for regular post-launch additions was kept, changed, or dropped.
- The PC release window.
- Which of the claims currently circulating under
unverifiedwill look correct in December. This page will be rewritten after launch, and the wrong ones will stay on it.
Last checked 14 September 2026 against rockstargames.com/VI, the Rockstar Newswire, the Rockstar store page, contemporaneous reporting from Bloomberg, IGN, Eurogamer, GameSpot and Kotaku, and the September 2026 items listed above. No leaked material is hosted or linked here.
