Grand Theft Auto VI launches Thursday, 19 November 2026. That is still months away from 1 September, and the listed hardware is PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only. You can fill the gap with games that exist. You cannot fill it with a VI demo, a VI Online beta, or a PC build. None of those are on sale.
This is a waiting list, not a training syllabus. Nothing you play will teach you VI’s unpublished wanted rules or Jason and Lucia’s mission order. The launch checklist is how you prepare the console. This page is how you prepare the evenings.
Play the last numbered GTA, on purpose
Grand Theft Auto V is still the current mainline game. If you never finished the story, finish it. Michael, Franklin, and Trevor are not a template Rockstar has applied on the record to VI, but they are the last time this company shipped a dual-or-more protagonist GTA campaign. The comparison page is GTA 6 vs GTA 5.
If you only play GTA Online, you are playing Take-Two’s long tail, not a VI preview. Zelnick has said they expect to keep supporting current GTA Online. Digital VI pre-orders include a month of GTA+ for that existing service. Using the wait to actually redeem that month after you know you will play V, not in a panic on 12 November, is the only mechanical crossover. Details: GTA Online after GTA 6.
Do not start a grind “so you are ready for VI businesses.” VI has no announced businesses.
Play the other Rockstar open worlds
Red Dead Redemption 2 is the last huge single-player Rockstar shipped. Slow, mean, beautiful. It will not teach you Vice City. It will remind you what this studio does when it is allowed to be a story instead of a session. If you bounced off it in 2018, a 2026 replay on current hardware is a better wait-filler than a fifth Cayo Perico.
Red Dead Redemption (the first) and GTA IV are the meaner, smaller-feeling siblings. IV’s Liberty City is named in Lucia’s bio as prior home, not as a playable VI city. Playing IV will not unlock a Liberty chapter in November. It will scratch a specific itch.
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (2002) is a 1980s period piece. VI is billed as modern-day Vice City. Play 2002 if you want the radio and the joke. Do not expect a remake. Full comparison: Vice City 2002 vs GTA 6.
Bully, the Max Payne remakes if you have them, L.A. Noire — same company family, different tools. Fine as palate cleansers. Not homework.
Play other crime-and-city games, with the caveat
People will recommend Sleeping Dogs, Mafia (especially Mafia III and The Definitive trilogies), Watch Dogs 2, Saints Row (the good one, not the reboot, unless you like the reboot), Cyberpunk 2077 after its years of patches, Starfield if you like walking. They are cities, crime, cars, or some mix.
They will not be Leonida. Rob Nelson’s Dazed remarks about phones, bodies, and couple-or-solo play are VI-specific and unpublished as a manual. Chasing a “most like GTA 6” substitute is how you spend $70 on a disappointment. Chase a good game instead.
If you want two-player evenings, VI is listed as 1 player. See co-op. Play something that actually has a second pad: It Takes Two, Split Fiction, Overcooked if you still like your friends, Helldivers 2, whatever your group already runs. Do not wait for Jason and Lucia to become couch co-op. They have not been announced as that.
If you are a PC-only player, VI is not listed for you. See GTA 6 on PC. Play PC games that exist. Buying a console “for GTA 6” is a product decision, not a moral one. This page will not make it for you.
Watch the official films once, then stop
Four official videos: Trailer 1 (1:31, ignore the 2025 end card), Trailer 2 (2:47, plot paragraph), An Extended Look (~26 minutes, in-game PS5 footage), and the 90-second Launch Trailer (15 October 2026). If you want the November campaign intact, you can skip the long one. If you watch it, watch Rockstar’s upload, not a commentary that launders pause-frames into patch notes.
Do not watch leak compilations as “prep.” Rockstar called recent leaks heartbreaking. Spoilers may affect the intended experience. That is the studio’s own warning.
What not to play as homework
- Fan-made “GTA 6 maps” in FiveM or other mods. They are not Leonida. Take-Two has issued DMCA notices against leaked map material.
- A fake PC spec benchmark of VI. There is no PC SKU and no spec sheet.
- Every 2026 open-world trailer that markets itself as “the GTA 6 killer.” None of them are.
- A second copy of V on a second console “for cross-play practice.” VI cross-play is not listed.
A practical September–November stack
If you want a sequence rather than a pile:
- Finish or replay GTA V’s story if it is sitting there undone.
- One full Red Dead Redemption 2 chapter you skipped, or the epilogue if you never did.
- Vice City (2002) on a weekend, for the name, not the systems.
- One non-Rockstar game you actually want to finish, so November does not arrive with a backlog hangover.
- In early November: checklist — edition chosen, SSD not full, account region correct. Pre-load 12 November. Launch 19 November.
Take-Two on 7 August 2026 still pointed at that Thursday. Two prior delays are public. Have a backup game for the evening if you invited people.
FAQ
Is there a GTA 6 demo?
No.

What if I only have a PS4 / Xbox One?

What if I only have a PC?
No PC SKU. Play PC games. Do not buy fake keys.
What we still don't know
- Whether a playable slice, Friends & Family, or review-code wave leaks a real hour count before 19 November.
- Whether Game Pass / PS Plus Extra ever carries VI. Unconfirmed; do not skip a pre-order on that hope.
- Whether the date moves. Timeline.
- Which 2026 releases will actually be good. This page is not a review section.
Last checked 1 September 2026 against rockstargames.com/VI (date and platforms), the 24 June 2026 Newswire (single-player SKU, GTA+ month), and the absence of a demo or PC listing. Game recommendations above are editorial, not Rockstar endorsements.
