Grand Theft Auto VI's digital pre-load begins 12 November 2026, local midnight — one week before the 19 November launch — confirmed by Rockstar's 24 June 2026 Newswire and Rockstar Support (18 August 2026). The file size is unpublished as of 14 September 2026: the PlayStation Store listing shows no install-size number for PlayStation 5, the Xbox listing shows none either, and there is no PC edition to have a size at all. On Rockstar's last two major launches the figure appeared 8–25 days before release — a historical pattern, not an announcement for VI.
Physical code-in-box copies, available for shipping and pickup from 12 November, exist specifically so the code can trigger that same digital pre-load a week early. There is no disc. Redeeming the code starts the download the same way a digital pre-order does.
What Rockstar has confirmed about pre-load
- Digital pre-load date: 12 November 2026, local midnight, for digital pre-orders. (Newswire, 24 Jun 2026; Support, 18 Aug 2026)
- Physical code pre-load: redeeming a code-in-box copy from 12 November starts the same pre-load. (Support, 18 Aug 2026)
- Purpose, in Rockstar's own words: to let players "ensure they are able to play at launch on November 19." Pre-load is not early access. The game stays locked until launch day regardless of when the files finish downloading.
- No file size. Not on Support, not on the Rockstar Store, not on the PlayStation Store listing as of 14 September 2026, and not on Xbox product listings.
That is the entire confirmed pre-load picture.
File size by platform
This table is the slot that gets filled the day a store listing shows a number. Every figure is unpublished as of 23 September 2026; nothing here is an estimate.
| Platform | Install size | Free space needed to install | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| PlayStation 5 | unpublished | unpublished | PlayStation Store listing (no size shown) |
| PlayStation 5 Pro | unpublished | unpublished | Same listing; no separate Pro figure |
| Xbox Series X | unpublished | unpublished | Xbox product listing (no size shown) |
| Xbox Series S | unpublished | unpublished | Same listing |
Will it fit on a Series S? The 512 GB Series S leaves roughly 364 GB usable out of the box; the 1 TB model roughly 802 GB. Whether GTA 6 fits alongside anything else depends entirely on the unpublished figure. RDR2's Series-era install is around 116 GB and GTA V's around 88 GB, so the launch-day question is not "does it fit" but "what else has to go".
Everything below is either official platform mechanics that apply to pre-loading in general, or historical Rockstar file sizes used as a reference point — explicitly not a prediction.
Why there is no number yet
Storage figures are normally finalized close to a game's gold master, which is one of the last steps before a title ships. Rockstar has not announced a gold-master date for VI, and the 6 November 2025 delay Newswire cited needing "extra months... to finish the game with the level of polish you have come to expect and deserve" — language that describes ongoing production, not a locked build. A file size printed today would likely be wrong by November. The number that matters will appear on the PlayStation Store and Microsoft Store product pages, historically days before pre-load rather than months ahead.
When the size usually appears
Rockstar has not said when VI's figure will post. The only dated precedents are the last two major launches.
| Game | Launch | When the figure appeared | Days before launch | Figure | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Grand Theft Auto V | 17 September 2013 | PlayStation Store, 23 August 2013 | 25 | ~18 GB | TheSixthAxis, 23 Aug 2013 |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | 26 October 2018 | PlayStation Store, 16 October 2018 | 10 | ~89.2 GB | RockstarINTEL, 16 Oct 2018 · VG247 |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | 26 October 2018 | Rockstar confirmation, 18 October 2018 | 8 | 99 GB install | Push Square, 18 Oct 2018 |
If VI followed the same window, the store figure would land between 25 October and 11 November 2026 (25 days out, as with V, through 8 days out, as with RDR2's confirmation). That range is a projection from past launches, not an announcement.
The only real reference points: GTA V and RDR2
The figures below are published install sizes for those same two games on later hardware than the 2013/2018 store listings above. They are still not GTA VI.
| Title | Platform | Confirmed install size | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grand Theft Auto V (next-gen upgrade) | PlayStation 5 | ≈86.8 GB | Rockstar/platform reporting on the 2022 PS5/Xbox Series upgrade |
| Grand Theft Auto V (next-gen upgrade) | Xbox Series X/S | ≈87.8 GB | Same upgrade cycle |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | PlayStation 4 | 99 GB (digital install additionally needs ~150 GB free during setup) | Rockstar Support: Red Dead Redemption 2 Installation Requirements |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | Xbox One | 107 GB | Same Support article |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | PS5 / Xbox Series X/S (later versions) | ≈116 GB | Platform storefront listings |
The 99 GB PS4 install is the same Rockstar confirmation dated 18 October 2018 in the table above; the Support article is still the live requirements page. That article is also explicit that the digital installation process can temporarily require far more free space than the game's final footprint, because of how the PlayStation file system unpacks downloads. "How much space do I need" and "how big is the final install" could be two different numbers, and only Rockstar's eventual Support article for VI will say which is which.
None of these figures is a GTA VI prediction. They are the only Rockstar console precedents that exist, offered as a range to plan around rather than a number to quote.
How pre-load actually works on PlayStation and Xbox
Pre-load is a general storefront feature, not something Rockstar built custom for VI, so the mechanics are documented by Sony and Microsoft rather than Rockstar.
PlayStation Store. Sony's support documentation describes pre-ordering and automatic download so that content "starts downloading as soon as it's available" for a given title, ahead of the unlock date. The exact number of days before launch that pre-load opens is set per game, not by a blanket PlayStation policy — Rockstar's 12 November date, a week ahead of the 19 November launch, is the VI-specific window it has chosen.
Xbox / Microsoft Store. Microsoft's pre-order FAQ (support.xbox.com) describes pre-purchasing and pre-downloading so a title can be played "the minute it becomes available," with the download itself able to start ahead of unlock. As with PlayStation, the specific pre-load date for an individual game is set by the publisher and appears on that game's storefront listing, not in the general FAQ.
Neither storefront's general documentation names a GTA VI file size, because that number is set by Rockstar per title and has not been published for either platform.
What to actually do before 12 November
Since there is no VI number to plan against yet, preparation is about headroom, not precision:
- Clear space now, generously. Rockstar confirmed RDR2's PS4 install at 99 GB, and the same Support article said the digital install needed about 150 GB free during setup. Until VI's own figure posts, that 99 GB install is the only Rockstar number to plan around — not a prediction of VI's size.
- Check your storefront account region, since PlayStation download codes are region-tied per Rockstar Support, and pre-load eligibility follows the same account.
- Redeem a physical code as soon as it arrives, if buying a code-in-box copy, so the pre-load window isn't shortened by a delayed redemption.
- Watch the PlayStation Store and Microsoft Store listings, not fan forecasts, for the actual number once it posts. The historical window above is 25 October–11 November 2026 — a projection from past launches, not an announcement.
The commercial side of the same date — what a pre-order includes, what a code-in-box actually is — is covered in pre-order and editions. Console hardware questions belong on platforms and system requirements, which also has no published PC spec because there is no PC edition.
FAQ
How big will GTA 6 be?
Unpublished as of 14 September 2026 (PlayStation Store listing checked; no install size on the page). RDR2's console footprint (99-116 GB depending on platform and era) is the only Rockstar precedent, not a GTA VI number.
When can I start downloading?
12 November 2026, local midnight, for digital pre-orders and redeemed physical codes.
Can I play during pre-load?
No. The game stays locked until 19 November regardless of download progress.
Does pre-load apply to physical copies?
Yes, once the in-box code is redeemed on or after 12 November.
Will there be a day-one patch?
Unpublished as of 14 September 2026. Support has not said whether launch requires an additional download beyond the pre-loaded base install.
Is there a PC version to have a file size?
No. See system requirements.
What we still don't know
- The actual GTA 6 file size, on either platform.
- Whether a day-one patch adds to the pre-loaded install.
- Whether PS5's install process needs temporary extra space beyond the final footprint, the way RDR2's PS4 version did.
- The exact hour pre-load opens in each region. See unlock times.
- Whether Ultimate Edition's extra content changes install size versus Standard.
