Grand Theft Auto VI has a final ESRB rating of M for Mature 17+ on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series. The ESRB.org database entry, checked 16 October 2026 (search “Grand Theft Auto VI”), lists the content descriptors Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humor, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, and Use of Drugs and Alcohol. The interactive element is In-Game Purchases (Xbox Series, PlayStation 5). ESRB’s summary: “Grand Theft Auto VI is rated M for Mature 17+ by the ESRB with Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humor, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, and Use of Drugs and Alcohol. Also includes In-Game Purchases.” The exact date ESRB posted the entry is not known here. It was posted by early October 2026, as reported. Rockstar’s Newswire posts of 24 September and 8 October 2026 print the same descriptor list plus In-Game Purchases in their footers. ESRB lists In-Game Purchases as an interactive element. Rockstar has announced no GTA VI Online mode. See Online.
PEGI, USK, Australia’s Classification Board, CERO, and IARC are not confirmed on this page. PEGI 18 remains the expectation; we have not checked a pegi.info entry.
If you searched “GTA 6 ESRB,” the final database entry is the record above. If you searched “GTA 6 PEGI,” that half is still not a certificate this page has on file.
The game still launches 19 November 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. It is sold as a single-player story about crime in Leonida.
What each channel is showing
| Channel | What it shows | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| ESRB.org | M for Mature 17+. Descriptors: Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humor, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, Use of Drugs and Alcohol. Interactive element: In-Game Purchases (Xbox Series, PlayStation 5). Checked 16 October 2026. Posted by early October 2026, as reported | Final board entry for those two platforms. In-Game Purchases is the interactive element ESRB lists. It is not an announcement of a GTA VI Online mode. Rockstar Newswire footers (24 September and 8 October 2026) print the same descriptor list plus In-Game Purchases |
| Rockstar Store (pre-October storefront) | Rating Pending, likely Mature | State checked 1 September 2026. Matches Take-Two “not yet rated” (24 June 2026). Pre-October storefront state, not the ESRB.org entry |
| PlayStation US product page (pre-October storefront) | ESRB RP image, likely Mature 17+; FAQ says ratings unconfirmed | Platform listing plus a cautious FAQ, checked 1 September 2026. Pre-October storefront state |
| Xbox US product page (pre-October storefront) | Rating Pending, likely Mature 17+ | Same RP-LM17+ pattern, checked 1 September 2026. Pre-October storefront state |
| Sony marketing emails, May 2026 (as reported by Eurogamer and others) | M 17+ with descriptors: blood and gore, intense violence, mature humour, nudity, strong language, strong sexual content, use of drugs and alcohol | First-party platform copy in a newsletter, widely reported. The descriptor set matches the ESRB.org entry checked 16 October 2026 |
| PlayStation FAQ precedent | GTA V was ESRB M and PEGI 18 | Precedent, not VI’s certificate |
| PEGI public search | Secondary roundups through summer 2026 reported no Grand Theft Auto VI entry in PEGI’s database while GTA V returned multiple | Not a certificate this page has opened on pegi.info |
| Germany / USK | GamesWirtschaft (14 Aug 2026): storefronts still “Einstufung ausstehend” / Rating Pending; no USK 18 posted yet | USK is its own board. Pending means pending. Not confirmed here |
| PlayStation on content | “Grand Theft Auto games regularly feature profanities, violence, sexual themes and depictions of illegal acts, and are generally not recommended for children.” | Platform parental-guidance sentence, not a rating board |
Australia’s Classification Board is often rumored in roundups. This page will not print an Australian certificate we have not opened on an official board site. If a later official listing lands, this article should gain a row.
Why “likely Mature” was the state until early October 2026
Until early October 2026, storefronts showed ESRB RP (Rating Pending) with the hint likely Mature 17+. RP is a real ESRB category. The hint is the storefront’s guess about where a pending rating will land, so an adult crime game is not filed as a children’s product while the board finishes.
That was the state on the Rockstar Store, PlayStation, and Xbox listings checked 1 September 2026, and it matches Take-Two’s 24 June 2026 line that the game was “not yet rated.” Sony’s May 2026 newsletter, as reported, already listed an M-style descriptor set. PlayStation’s FAQ, on the same page as the RP image, still said ratings were unconfirmed at that 1 September check. Those were not the same object as a board entry.
The board entry is the record now. ESRB.org, checked 16 October 2026, shows M for Mature 17+ with the descriptors and the interactive element In-Game Purchases. It was posted by early October 2026, as reported. The exact date ESRB posted it is not known here. The pre-October rows in the table are the earlier storefront state. Do not quote them as the current ESRB record.
For a parent: the ESRB rating is M for Mature 17+. PEGI and the other boards on this page are not confirmed. Do not buy this for a child.
PEGI 18 is the expectation, not a page we can quote as stamped
Every mainline GTA aimed at this audience has been PEGI 18 in Europe. PlayStation’s FAQ uses V as the example. Secondary reporting through 2026 described PlayStation UK showing a provisional 18-style badge while the PEGI database itself still lacked a VI title record.
Provisional storefront badges are not the same as a finished PEGI listing with descriptors (violence, sex, drugs, language, and the rest of PEGI’s icon set). When pegi.info carries Grand Theft Auto VI, this page should cite it. Until then, PEGI 18 is what you should plan for if you are a European retailer or parent, and it is not a certificate this article has on file.
USK in Germany is stricter as a process: no rating, no shelf in the usual retail sense. GamesWirtschaft’s mid-August 2026 piece is the reason this page says German storefronts were still pending then. A USK 18, if and when it lands, has ID-check consequences at till. Do not invent that it has already shipped.
What the game’s own marketing already tells parents
You do not need a board logo to know the tone. Official copy:
Vice City, USA. Jason and Lucia have always known the deck is stacked against them. But when an easy score goes wrong, they find themselves on the darkest side of the sunniest place in America, in the middle of a criminal conspiracy stretching across the state of Leonida.
Trailers and An Extended Look show crime, police, clubs, phones, weapons. PlayStation: not recommended for children. That is enough to refuse a 12-year-old’s request without waiting for PEGI’s PDF.
Console parental controls (PlayStation Family App; Xbox family settings) can block play by age on the account. PlayStation’s VI page points at that app. Use it. A pre-order in an adult account is still an adult game in the house.
“In-game purchases optional” is not a rating
ESRB lists In-Game Purchases as an interactive element on Xbox Series and PlayStation 5. Rockstar has announced no GTA VI Online mode. See Online.
PlayStation’s store flag in-game purchases optional sits next to the rating image. It is a store taxonomy tick. GameRant reported Rob Nelson saying the single-player would not have microtransactions. Cite as interview. The flag does not make VI a kids’ free-to-play, and it does not settle shark cards for a future live service that has not been announced.
Confirmed versus rumor
| Confirmed | Unconfirmed / rumor |
|---|---|
| ESRB.org, checked 16 October 2026: M for Mature 17+, with the descriptors and In-Game Purchases above. Posted by early October 2026, as reported. Rockstar Newswire footers of 24 September and 8 October 2026 print the same list | PEGI 18 as a pegi.info certificate this page has on file. PEGI 18 remains the expectation; we have not checked a pegi.info entry |
| Rockstar Store and Take-Two (24 June 2026), pre-October storefront state: not yet rated / RP likely Mature. PlayStation US and Xbox US, checked 1 September 2026: RP, likely Mature 17+; PlayStation FAQ still “unconfirmed” at that check | USK, Australia / CERO / IARC as final numbers we verified on board sites |
| GTA V: ESRB M, PEGI 18. PlayStation: not recommended for children | “Banned in [country]” posts that confuse a GTA+ offer exclusion with a ban |
Saudi Arabia / UAE pre-order availability and Russia storefront absence are store and sanctions questions, not PEGI. Do not mix them into an age-rating table.
FAQ
What is GTA 6’s ESRB rating?
M for Mature 17+ on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series. Content descriptors: Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humor, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, and Use of Drugs and Alcohol. Interactive element: In-Game Purchases (Xbox Series, PlayStation 5). ESRB’s summary: “Grand Theft Auto VI is rated M for Mature 17+ by the ESRB with Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humor, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, and Use of Drugs and Alcohol. Also includes In-Game Purchases.” Posted by early October 2026, as reported. ESRB lists In-Game Purchases as an interactive element. Rockstar has announced no GTA VI Online mode. See Online.
What is the PEGI rating?
Not cited here as a finished PEGI database record. PlayStation’s FAQ uses GTA V as PEGI 18.
Can a 16-year-old play it?
ESRB’s rating is M for Mature 17+. The series is adult. An unfinished PEGI or USK file does not make it a 16 game.
Is it Adults Only (AO)?
No. The ESRB entry is M for Mature 17+, not Adults Only. No storefront we checked lists AO. AO would be a different, rarer category. Do not invent it.
Will the rating change after review of the final build?
Boards rate the submitted build. History (Hot Coffee, last generation) shows ratings can move after release if hidden content appears. That is history, not a VI announcement.
What we still don't know
- PEGI’s finished icon set and wording.
- USK, ACB, CERO, and other national certificates.
- Whether any territory refuses classification.
- How storefronts will replace RP images in October–November.
Last checked 16 October 2026 against the ESRB.org database entry. Also on file from 1 September 2026: the Rockstar Store listing, Take-Two’s 24 June 2026 release, playstation.com/en-us/games/grand-theft-auto-vi/ (including its FAQ), Xbox’s US listing, and secondary reporting on Sony’s May 2026 newsletter and USK pending status. Board databases can move; this page should move with them.
