What happens to GTA Online after GTA 6

Current GTA Online — the live service inside Grand Theft Auto V — is not scheduled to switch off on 19 November 2026. Strauss Zelnick has said Take-Two expects to keep supporting it. Grand Theft Auto VI, on the other hand, is sold as a single-player experience (Rockstar Newswire, 24 June 2026). There is no GTA VI Online product page, no VI Online date, and no Take-Two lineup slot for a successor.

If you searched “what happens to GTA Online when GTA 6 comes out,” that pairing is the official picture: the old city stays on; the new game is a campaign. The longer “is Online in the box?” explainer is GTA 6 Online. This page is the practical one: sharks, GTA+, friends lists, and what you should not sell.

The sentence that governs the new game

From the 24 June 2026 Newswire:

Grand Theft Auto VI is a single player experience, coming November 19 to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

PlayStation’s FAQ repeats it. Xbox lists Single player. Ultimate extras are “threaded across all aspects of Jason and Lucia’s story.” None of that is a session browser.

Companies add online later. They also sometimes do not, on day one. The only honest present tense is: the thing you can pre-order is single-player. Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier has reported that Rockstar is not planning to talk soon about a successor. That is reporting, not a Newswire. It is also not a denial that a successor exists in a studio somewhere. It is a statement about communications timing.

The sentence that governs the old game

Zelnick’s public remarks on keeping support for current GTA Online are the opposite of a sunset date. They are also not a 2028 content roadmap. “Keep supporting” can mean years of updates or a long tail of lights-on servers. Take-Two has not published the difference.

GTA Online is the reason a 2013 game still has a patch-notes column. It still prints money. The rational corporate read — labelled as a read — is that you do not unplug a machine like that on the week you launch a $80 campaign. The emotional player read is: “they will starve V the minute VI exists.” Neither read is a patch schedule.

The GTA+ month that keeps getting misread

Digital pre-orders of VI include one month of GTA+. Physical code-in-box copies, per Support, do not list that month.

GTA+ is a membership for today’s GTA Online and the GTA+ Games Library. PlayStation’s VI page: redeem by 31 March 2027; auto-renews unless you cancel; existing subscribers get the month added on. Official blurb language in the 24 June materials describes GTA Online benefits (the GTA$ deposit, discounted vehicles, the games library) — all V-era.

Redeeming it does not unlock a hidden VI server. It does not move your Kosatka to Leonida. It is a marketing add-on attached to a pre-order of a different game.

If you do not play GTA Online, do not redeem the month out of anxiety on 12 November. If you do play, redeem it when you will use it, then cancel before it rolls into a paid month.

What you should not do with your V character

Unconfirmed, because Rockstar has not said them:

• Transfer a GTA Online character into VI
• Transfer shark-card balances
• Transfer properties, cars, or K/D
• A “legacy” bonus for VI
• A shutdown date for last-gen or current-gen V Online

Selling your account, panic-buying shark cards “before they close,” or deleting V to free a VI-sized block of storage you do not yet have a number for, are all ways to hurt yourself for a rumor. File size for VI is unpublished. See system requirements. When the 12 November pre-load prints a number, free that number. Do not free your entire library in September on a guess.

Friends, and the November social problem

VI is listed as 1 player. Co-op is not on the store. Cross-play is not on the store. Your crew cannot meet in Leonida on day one as a listed feature.

They can still meet in Los Santos, in the service Take-Two says it will keep supporting. The awkward November is: some friends will vanish into a campaign for two weeks; some will stay in Online because that is their GTA; some will be on PC with no VI SKU at all (GTA 6 on PC). Plan the group chat around that. Do not plan it around a silent VI Online launch.

Xbox add-on noise, labelled as noise

Around pre-order week, players spotted Xbox add-on rows — Vintage pack, Ultimate upgrade, and a “Story” line that “doesn’t need to be installed.” Coverage treated that as a hint that story and a future Online could be separate installs, the way V and Online were later split in stores.

That is store-structure speculation. It is not a Newswire that says “GTA VI Online is in the files.” This page will not promote a maybe. If Rockstar announces a successor, it will not arrive as a Reddit screenshot of an Xbox add-on list.

A practical list for Online players

1. Keep the V install if you still play. Lights-on is the official expectation.
2. Do not spend extra GTA$ as a VI investment. There is no listed bridge.
3. Use the GTA+ month as a V coupon, or skip it.
4. Budget SSD space when VI’s number exists, not before.
5. Treat November 19 as a campaign night, not a crew night, unless the Newswire changes.
