This one is about a game you can play today. It covers FiveM and Grand Theft Auto V as they run now, and it is checked against the platform's own documentation and release notes rather than against anything Rockstar has said about Grand Theft Auto VI.

Grand Theft Auto V now exists as two separate builds on Steam: Grand Theft Auto V Legacy and Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced. They are listed as distinct store pages, not two settings inside one game, and which one you should buy or run in 2026 depends mostly on one question: do you need FiveM.

This page is the practical answer. For what FiveM itself is, see what is FiveM. For the licensing side of running a custom server on either build, see how to start a FiveM server.

The short answer

If you play GTA V for FiveM roleplay or custom servers today, buy or keep Legacy. The original FiveM platform runs on Grand Theft Auto V Legacy, and that is still where the overwhelming majority of servers, scripts, and frameworks live as of September 2026.

If you only care about the base single-player game and Rockstar's own GTA Online, Enhanced is the current version Rockstar sells and updates, released as a free upgrade for existing PC owners on 4 March 2025, according to Rockstar's own Newswire post.

Two separate Steam listings

Grand Theft Auto V Legacy and Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced are two different Steam app pages, not two menu options in one installer. Anyone buying or gifting the game on PC in 2026 needs to pick the correct listing, since a purchase of one does not automatically grant the other unless Rockstar's upgrade terms apply.

Enhanced is the build Rockstar actively promotes and patches going forward; it carries the updated visuals and technical work Rockstar shipped in the March 2025 PC release. Legacy is the older executable and file structure that FiveM's original platform was built against.

Why FiveM still means Legacy, for now

FiveM's original platform requires Grand Theft Auto V Legacy, the pre-Enhanced build, according to fivem.net. Cfx.re does support a second build, FiveM for GTAV Enhanced, which reached early access for server owners in 2026 — the official Cfx forum announcement dates that early-access launch to 21 July 2026 and describes it as opening to server owners first, with wider player access planned for later months.

Early access for server owners is not the same as a finished, universally supported release. As of the most recent check, the practical guidance for anyone who wants to actually play on an established roleplay or custom server is still: run Legacy. Most communities have not migrated, and scripts written for Legacy are not automatically compatible with Enhanced, since Cfx.re treats them as separate client/server platforms with their own asset formats. A conversion tool exists for moving assets from Legacy to Enhanced, but that is a manual step server owners have to take, not an automatic bridge.

What changes on Enhanced, according to Cfx.re

The Enhanced build of FiveM is not a cosmetic reskin of the old one. Coverage of the July 2026 early-access launch, sourced from the Cfx forum announcement and picked up by outlets tracking the release, describes a substantially higher network synchronization ceiling and support for far larger player counts than Legacy's servers typically run. Server owners weighing a move should treat those as platform-level changes worth testing before committing a live community to the switch, not a drop-in replacement.

If you are buying GTA V for the first time in 2026

Check what you actually want to do before you buy:

  • Want to join or run a FiveM roleplay server today? Get Grand Theft Auto V Legacy. It is what the established FiveM ecosystem runs on.
  • Want the current single-player game and GTA Online as Rockstar ships them now? Get Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced.
  • Already own Legacy and want Enhanced too? Rockstar's March 2025 release framed Enhanced as a free upgrade for existing PC owners of the original game; confirm current eligibility on the Steam store page before assuming it still applies to a fresh purchase.
  • Planning to run a server and eyeing FiveM for GTAV Enhanced? Understand it is early access aimed at server owners, not a mature, fully documented platform yet.

Neither build changes the underlying rule from what is FiveM: you still need a legitimate, purchased copy of whichever build your server or platform targets.

If you are weighing whether the older game is still worth your time before the sequel lands, see GTA 5 in 2026.

FAQ

Do I need to buy GTA V twice for Legacy and Enhanced?

Rockstar offered Enhanced as a free upgrade for existing PC owners when it launched in March 2025; check the current Steam listing for whether that upgrade path still applies to your account.

Which version do FiveM servers run on in 2026?

The large majority still run on Grand Theft Auto V Legacy. FiveM for GTAV Enhanced exists but is in early access, aimed first at server owners.

Can I use Enhanced-only scripts on a Legacy server?

No. Cfx.re treats Legacy and Enhanced as separate client/server platforms, and assets do not carry over automatically; a conversion tool exists but requires manual work.

Is Enhanced better than Legacy for single-player?

Enhanced is the version Rockstar currently updates and sells as the standard PC edition; it carries the technical work from the March 2025 release.

Will FiveM eventually be Enhanced-only?

Not announced. As of September 2026, both builds are supported, with Enhanced still in early access for server owners.

Where do I check which build a script or server needs?

Ask the server owner or script seller directly, and confirm before installing anything; see how to start a FiveM server for setup-level detail.
